Flagler Railroad & The Custom House

We decided to take part of a new exhibit that opened up here in Key West. They have gathered a variety of artifacts, information and even some video footage of Henry Flagler's railroad, the Florida East Coast Railway. Henry Flagler's railroad was thought to be impossible but was built and reached from to St. Augustine to Key West, and was finished on January 22, 1912. A category 5 hurricane struck the Florida Keys on September 2, 1935, wiping out parts of the railroad and killing hundreds. The movie Key Largo was based on that storm. The bankrupt Florida East Coast Railway sold the remaining parts of the railway to the State of Florida which was used as a road for car travel up and down the Keys. Parts of Flagler's railroad are still visible, but rapidly deteriorating. These are photos of our trip to the Custom House to view the exhibit.
